Last week was my kids’ Spring Break. And not only was it the first time they’ve all had a Spring Break, but the first time it coincided with a light week at work – the orchestra was on vacation. This meant that it was possible to get a few days off and scoot out to the beach with the three kids, my au pair, and my mom.
We were three-on-three, in terms of the ratio of adults to kids, which I have to say is a perfect ratio! Especially when the oldest kid doesn’t need any management or childcare – she’s 9 and likes to read, help out, play with her brothers. So that meant we were 3-on-2 adults to the boys. Perfect.
It was cool and windy when we arrived in Bethany Beach, Delaware, but we immediately took our au pair (who’s from Denmark) to see the Atlantic Ocean for the first time.
I was really only there for the equivalent of a weekend but in that time, we did the typical off-season beachy things that you do when the weather is bad —
We went outlet shopping.
We went to a movie.
We ate out.
Actually, that picture is significant because this is my child with food allergies, safely eating a meal at Chipotle. I won’t say I wasn’t terrified to try a new place, but they have no nuts on the premises and I did a bunch of research before ordering. Phew!
And I found time to get in some exercise – if you saw my PUMA Ignite shoes and outfit post last week, that was an awesome speed work run. I’m actually wearing those shoes as every day shoes all the time since I love how they look and feel! I keep forgetting they are running shoes since they look good with jeans.
And as you recall on Tuesday in my post about loving the bike trainer, I tossed that thing in the trunk of the car after looking at the weather forecast, and it was a good thing. It wasn’t great outdoor riding weather.
I don’t have a garage at home, so I enjoyed making a crazy tower to put my tablet so I could watch a show while riding. I missed my usual music stand setup.
I got in a fantastic workout, took a quick shower, loaded the car, and then drove the 2.5+ hours home.
Other fun things last week included a date night with my husband – he’s a beer lover and homebrewer, and there’s a newish place near us with 120 beers on tap.
This threw me into indecision, so I ordered a flight of beers to sample a few things.
This flight of beers, while delicious, caused me to fall asleep on the couch Thursday night. Okay, confession: I fall asleep on the couch regularly anyhow, so maybe we can’t blame the beer. Then I was awake in the middle of the night for a while, so then I overslept Masters Swimming on Friday. Darn beer!
So Friday night I was going to do a bike trainer or other workout, but then we ended up spending time with friends. So that was two days of no workout. Not good when I’m in a half Ironman training cycle!
I spent the weekend in the RRCA Coaching Certification course to be trained to be a running coach. It was really interesting and useful, and I’ll post a whole recap of that shortly. I learned a lot that will help my own running in addition to helping others!
On Sunday I met a few others from the class for a pre-class run. I ran 1 mile before the group, then we ran just over 5 together.
It was a nice negative split run for me. The only problem was that my plan called for 8. Win some, lose some. In terms of last week? I lost some. I missed three of my workouts, so I’m hoping to stay on track this week as I gear up for triathlon season.
I feel in okay shape for the Columbia Half Marathon on April 26, but I don’t think I’ll beat my Rock n Roll DC finish time since the course is hilly. I’m really excited about it though because it should be a really nice race!
