Aerial Yoga and Other Adventures

It’s time for the weekly training recap, but this one is a little more special than the others. Because last week was one crazy week: it had a little bit of everything – running, triathlon training, working, family time, new fitness adventures, hanging out with friends, and then more of everything packed into the weekend. And the thing about the week is that it was all major stuff – from aerial yoga to a swim race to working a huge event all weekend long.

But the really incredible thing? I got in just about all my workouts! I worked out six days last week, and some of those days were actually doubles. My Training Peaks log is GREEN more than it has ever been before. [For those of you who aren’t familiar with Training Peaks, the coach puts workouts on the schedule and if you do them, they turn green. If you don’t = red. I was rocking the green workouts!]

So here’s how it shook out:

MONDAY – I took a rest day on Monday. I needed it! My sister came over to drink wine and catch up with me, which was way worth it.

TUESDAY – The morning workout didn’t happen because I had a big workday, but I got it done late at night. I was in the middle of my bike workout at 10pm and thought about cutting it short, but kept pushing through for the full 45 minutes! I streamed a cycling class via Peloton.

WEDNESDAY – After work I headed to CorePower Yoga and did the hot YogaSculpt class. It was fantastic – I love the class – strength, stretching, pushing limits in the heated room. It was a great workout!

My arms felt like jelly but then I went and swam at the gym – I did the 2400 yards that was on my training plan and felt so accomplished.

THURSDAY – Thursday is devoted to track with the LUNA Chix team and our friends who join us. The workout was tough – a series of 1,000s – but I was feeling pretty good.

Running on the track

I went to work after track and realized I had done three workouts since the time I left the office the evening before! That was a great feeling.

After work, I went to the salon for an appointment and met a friend for wine. What a great week for social time in addition to the workouts!

FRIDAY – My package at Zengo Cycle was about to expire, so I decided to hit up a class before it went poof. I am seriously addicted to cycling classes, but I know I need to do more work on my bike trainer. I did a little brick workout by running a couple of miles after the cycling class, but I almost got hit by a car! It was really scary – I had to literally dive out of the intersection as someone flew out of a shopping center just as I ran into the crosswalk.

Thankfully I’m A-OK, but it was a close call. I worked about 12 hours, getting home at 11:45pm totally exhausted.

SATURDAY – I woke up early and went to the Swim Fest at Fort Ritchie, a swim race put on by Racine Multisports. It was a great atmosphere, lots of fun and I saw a lot of people I knew at the race. It was a gorgeous morning and the lake is one of my favorite places to swim.

I swam the 2250 race, which was 3 laps of the course, plus running along the shore and jumping back in off a pier. My watch said I did 2446 meters total. I was having some shallow breathing issues during the first 1.5 laps, and in lap 2 my timing strap was coming off. I wasn’t fast and it wasn’t pretty, but I was glad to get in a solid open water swim practice this early in the season.

Again, I worked all evening, getting home at close to midnight.

SUNDAY – I was pretty wiped out from Saturday’s activities, but I needed to get in the last long run before ZOOMA Annapolis half marathon. I went out and ran for 10 miles, but it was a tough one. It was my first long run with heat and humidity, and I was struggling.

Here’s a quick video – link is here if you can’t view it.

After the run, I showered and went to an aerial yoga workshop with my sister. It was simply magical. Amazing. I loved it! The silks are tied from the ceiling – it’s 8 feet of fabric and extremely strong. The instructor eased us into it by sitting, then lying in a cocoon, then we gradually worked up to inversions and other really cool hangs. It was transformative and restorative – I felt like a new person afterwards!

After that I went downtown to work the Memorial Day Concert for the rest of the night. Truly a packed day.

MONDAY – I’ll toss in Monday as a bonus day since this makes a streak of 7 days in a row of working out. I was dead tired from the weekend. The weather prevented me from getting in my outdoor ride, but I went to Zengo Cycle for a class since I had the whole day off and it was intense! I looked like I had been swimming afterwards. It wasn’t 30 miles outside but it was a great workout.

So there you have it – 7 packed days with great workouts. I loved the variety and the intensity of my workouts. This week should be less intense for workouts, as I’m tapering for the ZOOMA Annapolis half marathon.

How did you spend Memorial Day weekend?
