Happy random week in January! Seriously, my days are blurring together and my weeks are flying by. It’s Inauguration week here in DC and the city is getting crazy. Barricades going up, streets preparing for closures, the city basically starting to shut down for normal business and turn into Inauguration Mode. Offices are closed on Friday and I plan to stay far away from DC!
Training is rolling along, but after the totally full week of training I recapped last week, I had a less than stellar week to follow. But let me set the stage: the kids’ dad was at a conference all week, so I was aa single working mom with three kids all week. Plus, my au pair left since her year was up and I pieced together babysitters to cover my working hours. I worked – with some early morning meetings and long commutes.
I was exhausted.
So here’s a down and dirty recap of Ironman Lake Placid training- January 9-15:
Monday was a rest day. I’m doing pretty awesome at those lately. I had family over for a farewell dinner for my au pair, so basically I ate too much on my rest day without burning any calories.
Tuesday was supposed to be a running speed workout, but I had an early meeting and had to hit the road for my commute at about 7-7:30am. I could not get up early enough to run on the treadmill, take care of the kids, and then be at work on time.
Wednesday was supposed to be a swim workout but I had no way to get to the pool without asking extra hours of my babysitters. Since I already worked a long day, I opted to spend the time with the kids and do chores.
Thursday was a running speed workout. I tried to do this on the treadmill when the kids went to bed, but I was really exhausted and kind of dizzy. So at 9pm I stopped. I might have gotten in about 30 minutes.
I was starting to feel like crap about my training week by this point…
Friday I did a bike workout on my trainer. One hour + 15 minutes and it was solid!
I was so glad to get in a solid workout after three days of failures. The bike trainer intensity felt too easy, though, so I mentioned this to my coach (you can guess what’s coming on Sunday now!).
Saturday my coach said run “8 miles and only 8 miles”, because the previous week I added a couple of bonus miles to my run. Sorry, coach. I wasn’t in any danger of going overboard with this one since it was a treadmill run.
I spent just a few minutes playing around on Zwift testing how to ride with a group with BASE Performance buddies – virtually riding together. It wasn’t a “workout” – I barely pedaled more than if I had walked up and down the stairs a few times.
I had a great day inside with my kids relaxing and having a true “day off” from work/school/life/stress and then hit the treadmill. But let’s just say… I had a few interruptions. It was a struggle, but I got it done. 8 miles and only 8 miles.
Sunday I did the lactate threshold testing on the bike since my Friday workout was too easy. My coach had me do this in hard work. But in the end my stats changed to show improved fitness, so my workouts should be more effective now.
So that’s a wrap for last week! It started out pretty awful with workouts, but then I picked it up by the weekend.
How’s your week going?
