Week 0.
Or is it called Week -1? What do you call the week after a Big Race? That post-Half-Ironman Week of training? Maybe I call it “sluggish”, “sore”, and “sunburned” week. But since life goes on, and I need to keep moving, keep exercising, keep training for the next awesome things on my race calendar, I tried to actually do some swimming, biking, and running rather than being a complete slug.
I still need to post my race recap, and I have it mostly ready to go. I need to finish it up but here’s the weird thing – I actually ordered the official race photos but I’ve been waiting a while and still don’t have them! I’m not sure what’s going on with FinisherPix but the one time I actually spend the money and they haven’t sent them. I want to use them in my recap so I’ll wait another day to see if they magically appear.
So what did I do in my week of training after the Half Ironman?
Monday – Nothing. I was sunburned and sore, and dying for a day of nothing. Well, “nothing” includes a super busy day at work, but I mean no physical workout!
Tuesday – My training plan said a 30-minute easy spin on the trainer “or a rest day”, and I took the rest day! Sometimes you just need a “normal” day after a race to be the normal mom who doesn’t rush around to exercise before work. At lunchtime, I took a nice walk from my office to get my annual mammogram. Hey, you gotta do it! At least I got some sunshine on the walk.
Wednesday – Wednesday = Track Day in my life since the LUNA Chix season started up! It was awesome to actually run after the walk/jog/run of the Eagleman half Ironman heat-fest. I didn’t go too intense but it felt good to be there with company.
I usually go to a branch of my gym to shower and then on to work. Sometimes I’ll do a core workout at the gym or some other activity. After track on this week, I arrived at the parking garage for the gym and promptly fell asleep in my car. I was completely disoriented after that!
Then after work I took my middle to a birthday party at the splash park.
I was pretty wiped out after that long day that started at 5am.
Thursday – This wasn’t a planned rest day, but I didn’t get up in the morning to do my bike trainer workout, and in the evening I fell asleep when the boys went to bed. On the couch. I wrote about my Vitamin D deficiency last week, but was this a result of that? Or was it just because I’m exhausted from the race and life?
Friday – I was a few minutes late to Masters Swimming but I jumped into the lane and did the workout. It was a sprinting day. I felt slow and uncoordinated. It was hard. But I did it.
And just when I thought I didn’t quite hit my 2,000 yard goal because my watch said 1,850, I realized that the pool and my watch were in meters now that we’re in a different pool for the summer, and I succeeded in my yardage goal once it was converted since it equalled 2,023 yards.
Saturday – Group bike ride with the LUNA Chix. I was the sweep, which was awesome since it was my first time on a bike since Eagleman and I wasn’t looking forward to it. But it was great – I met some awesome ladies and conquered some hills on our 20-mile ride in Northern Virginia.
After that, I took the boys to a birthday party at the fire station, which was totally fun!
We also had a trip to Target, which was pretty awful with the boys. I swear, wrangling them in public is sometimes a huge challenge.
After dinner, I went back to Target with my daughter since something was left at the register. That was not a challenge – it was so lovely to hang out with her. I managed to spend more money on the second trip to Target than on the first!
I then stayed up too late watching Orange is the New Black episodes on Netflix. I’m not as enamored with Season 3 as the previous seasons but I’m dying to see what happens next after each episode, so I’m still hooked!
Sunday – I was so tired in the morning from my late night Netflix bingeing, and we had a mid-morning birthday party in the neighborhood. So I didn’t do my 5-mile run in the morning, but we had a lovely time at the party!
I spent a lot of time going down a bouncy house slide with my youngest, who would climb to the top and was scared to go down.
Then I did chores and got out for 3 sweat-drenched miles before Father’s Day dinner at my parents’ house. I took a relaxed pace and just considered it post-Eagleman heat training for summer races. I felt like a glutton for punishment after last week’s hot race!
Father’s Day dinner at my parents’ house was awesome. We had a cocktail bar, a salad bar, and an ice cream bar. Then we walked the kids to a nearby playground but it was really buggy outside so we didn’t stay long.
So that’s that. Some good training, some not so good missed workouts. But I’m feeling pretty well on track for the next phase of triathlon training.
Oh and hey – if you subscribe to Triathlete Magazine, let me know if you see someone who looks familiar (me) on one of the pages in an ad! More on that later when it hits the mailboxes.
I’m linking up with the lovely Tara from Running n Reading for the Weekend Update! Go check her and the others out.
What’s one thing you accomplished this weekend?
