Two For One Running & Triathlon Training Recap

On Friday, I mentioned how I have been kinda-sorta-pretty-very busy, and hadn’t posted my usual weekly triathlon training recap. Oh, and I ran a half marathon tossed in for good measure this weekend. So here’s my double week training recap. I don’t want it to get too long so I’m sparing you all the blabbing about my life that I sometimes include. You’re welcome or I’m sorry.

I’ve had some issues with photos so I’m going to give you the rundown with fewer pics than usual. You’re welcome or I’m sorry, depending on whether you like photos. You can always follow me on Instagram for the day-by-day inside peek at my training and a little bit of other stuff tossed in.

So here’s how the triathlon training has been going. My last recap was entitled My Week as a “Normal Person” – meaning I didn’t work out much. My, how that has changed the past two weeks! Maybe a break due to circumstances was what I needed for motivation. I

Week of September 28-October 4

Monday – On the heels of the Frederick Women’s Sprint Triathlon the day before, I got my butt out of bed and to the pool on Monday morning. I had a goal to hit 4/5 weekday workouts and almost made it. But the Monday determination resulted in 2100 yards at Masters and I felt amazing and strong. Find a pool photo here.

Tuesday – I had an early staff meeting at work so I was out the door at the time I am usually wrapping up a workout. I was 100% exhausted that night so an evening workout did not happen either. I can’t remember but I would almost bet that I fell asleep putting the boys to bed. Sorry not sorry.

Wednesday – It was the weekly Wednesday 5:45am LUNA Chix track workout with the usual four miles total at the track. We did six 600s with 200 recovery between, along with two laps of warm up + two cool down. We tried to keep at 10K pace and it made me want to run a 10K to put the track work to the test!

That was a late evening at work, followed by a LUNA Chix fundraiser event, then I went to the store to find un-cross-contaminated pistachios for my son’s food allergy “Challenge” the next morning. Crazy day! Thursday  – After a couple weeks of no bike trainer workouts, it was so nice to get “reacquainted” with it. Unfortunately, I only got in 40 of the 60 minutes on my training schedule, but 40 is better than 0!

Friday – I can’t even remember this day, except that I didn’t do a morning workout and had plans that evening. It just didn’t happen. So therefore I didn’t get in my 4/5 weekday workouts, but I was okay with it since I was non-stop packed that week.

Saturday – My training plan called for 1 hour & 50 minutes of outdoor bike riding. I did 100 minutes (1 hour & 40 minutes!) on the bike trainer due to the rain outside, and simply time. Time because I was squeezing this in between kid activities and working a concert that evening.

Sunday – This was a great running day. Ten miles total to prep for the Rock n Roll Brooklyn Half Marathon. I met my Moms Run This Town group for a special joint run with a member’s training group for five miles, then did the course again on my own to make ten total. The fall running was invigorating!

Later that day I polished up my Pumpkin Ale Chili recipe and then went to a memorial service for a friend and colleague. He was a person who lived life with gusto and cared about others, and it was a good reminder for how to have a positive outlook on life and to do for others.

Week of October 5-11

Monday – Kicked off the week with a 2,000 yard swim at Masters Swimming. I am loving my Monday swim days!

TuesdayAnd then there are the mornings where I’m in my bike clothes serving the kids breakfast, signing school papers, doing dishes, publishing a blog post, and never get on the actual bike. This was one of those mornings.

Wednesday – TRACK DAY! Four miles with the LUNA Chix and friends. We did a distance progression workout at target paces and here’s how mine shook out: 400 (8:24), 800 (7:59), 1200 (8:16), 1600 (8:44), plus warm up and cool down, and dynamic drills. It took me all of the warm up and the first 400 to get going and more awake since 5:45 feels early when you have less than 4-5 hours of sleep!

Thursday – I had to leave the house really early to catch a bus to New York for a work meeting that afternoon. It was a craaaazy traffic day and I almost missed the bus! The day was super stressful with that hour to get to the bus station (usually 20-25 minutes), 4+ hours on the bus, an hour in a taxi to my meeting, then a train and subway back to Manhattan. I was wiped out but really needed to break a good sweat. I signed up for a “first class free” at Peloton Cycling in New York City and it was great! They stream their workouts online so i might sign up for the service to do some at-home cycling classes since I am getting a bike next weekend (I won it this summer in a contest – more on that when it arrives!).

Friday – I did a nice and relaxed 3 mile run on the Hudson River in New York to shake out my legs before the race the next day.

Saturday – Rock n Roll Brooklyn Half Marathon! I ran strong and enjoyed running through Brooklyn. A beautiful fall morning for another sub-2 hour half marathon. That makes all 3 this year, so I’m feeling fired up for running once triathlon season is completely over for me!

After the race I took the bus back to Maryland and joined my mom’s birthday dinner in progress. Our au pair’s parents are here from Denmark so it was really nice.

Sunday – Ummm… total fail. I had a long ride on the schedule but it was a bit nutty having been away from the kids for a couple of nights. I couldn’t just leave and go out on my bike, and so the planned trainer ride just never happened. We took the kids to an Oktoberfest and had another dinner at my parents’ house with the visiting family of our au pair. I have to fess up that my legs were really sore and I’m annoyed that I didn’t get it done with the biking so close to my big race.

I am going to have to get in a long trainer ride on a weekday this week.

Insert sad face. Or guilty face. Or worried-about-my-race face.

So there you have it. I did the best I could these two weeks, and got in almost everything on the plan, but not quite. I didn’t make some bike workouts bricks as scheduled, and missed a big long ride. And a swim, I think. I’m too depressed to go back and check my training plan.

So now it’s a new week and a fresh start again! Phew! Triathlon training is still underway with one more big race of the season. I’m looking forward to changing it up more in the Off Season pretty soon!

Are you training for anything right now?
