The Good, the Bad, and the Nonexistent

So the past two weeks I’ve been happy to post my training recaps for the Challenge Florida half iron distance triathlon. Today there’s one that I’m not so happy to post.

Okay, I know that every time I post a weekly training recap, people say they are exhausted just reading it. Yes, I’m a pretty busy gal but I need to exercise to stay fit and healthy and I try to fit that into my life. But sometimes life gets in the way of that.

When we left off it was after my 11-mile run on Sunday last weekend. I had gotten in 41/50 miles on the bike and 11/12 on the run that weekend. I had managed to fit in much of my training despite a pretty busy schedule that was heating up at work and at home.

But finally, people, it all fell apart. It fell apart under the busy-ness and exhaustion of work, kids, and life. Unfortunately it was during what was supposed to be a heavy training week. I thought about not posting my training recap and just saying “fail” as a summary, but I think that it’s better to actually write the recap. I never want to just post the best of the training and stay quiet about the worst, right? So might I share with you The Good, the Bad, and the Nonexistent?

What you don’t find in this recap are excuses, excuses, excuses. What you will find is hashtag-real-life. We’re hip with a hashtag today: #reallife. It’s called – I had other things in life that took priority over my triathlon training.

And that’s just how life is.

MondayBoom! Made it to Masters Swimming on time and feeling ready for the week. I was feeling awesome. 2200 yards and I felt like I was going to rock the week!

After swimming, I went home and showered, got kids ready for school, then went to get blood work that I had been needing to do for a while to recheck my Vitamin D levels. By the way, ZERO CHANGE after months of prescription Vitamin D. That’s another post though.

I then worked all day through an evening rehearsal. I got home at about midnight and had been running around a lot, so I was pretty tired from being go-go-go since 6am.

Tuesday – Frankly, I don’t remember the morning but I likely overslept my workout alarm because I was so tired from running around all day and working so late.

I went to work, worked all day through an evening concert. The concert was with a famous rapper performing with the symphony and it was really busy all day getting ready and then running around during the concert itself. After these concerts we are there until the orchestra, conductor, and all artists leave the building. Then we clean up the dressing rooms. I got home after midnight. Zzzzz… #reallife

Wednesday I did not go to track. I have to leave by 5:25am to make it on time, and although I have done track on very little sleep, I felt like someone ran my body over with a truck. I decided a couple hours of sleep was better for me than doing track.

That evening, I walked the dog. That was all my exercise for that day. #reallife

Great dane on a walk

Thursday – This is the day when I started to think I’m not as young as I used to be and working two 14 hour days and getting home until after midnight does a number on me for days. I couldn’t get up. Again.

I thought I’d get in an evening workout after work but I was going to a Jamberry Ladies’ Night at a friend’s house, and let’s face it – I did my nails, had sangria, and went home and fell asleep on the couch. #reallife

Friday – Don’t blame me on this day, I actually woke up in time to go to swimming when I woke up at 5:30am on the couch. But my 3 year old woke up about 2 seconds later and was really fussy. He wanted me to lie down with him and so I fell back to sleep for a couple of hours. It happens. #reallife

I had packed a gym bag to take to work but then I actually didn’t feel very good that day – I was dizzy and just felt really off. I got some fresh air at lunchtime and took a short walk, hydrated, and felt much better but still not up to a run – plu

After work I quickly changed clothes and took the older two to Bingo Night at one of the elementary schools. Totally worth it, great time with the kids!

Saturday – Here is where I got really stressed about the lack of training this week. I had a 60-mile bike ride on the training plan and that would take a few hours on the trainer or off. I did not have a three-hour block of time in this day.

The boys were terribly behaved all morning and I had to give a couple time outs. Then I had to take my son to teeball where it was picture day, take my daughter to a birthday party in the afternoon, and I had to work at night. Oh and one kid was bleeding from the head in the afternoon. Here’s how it all went down, in short snippets:

Feed kids breakfast, break up fights, deal with younger two behaving like they are 3 and 6 (they are 3 and 6). Administer time outs for which they won’t stay in time out.

Finally get on the bike for one hour. Go me.

Teeball picture day and game. And might I quote from Facebook: “Teeball picture day. The day when you hope the teeball shirt is clean enough, you can’t get your kid out of the house on time, he has food on his face, resists tucking the shirt in and brushing the hair, and his brother won’t get out of the picture. But when he finally smiles for the pic it’s so cute you forget all that!”

I had taken both boys and drove through McDonalds and got them Happy Meals on the way home. Why yes, yes I did. I didn’t order anything for myself. Go me.

Then I took my daughter to a birthday party – it was cold and windy at the start of the birthday party hike, but then really enjoyable in the woods.

She had a nice time!

hiking with daughter On our way home we stopped at Starbucks for a hot drink to warm up, but we got a call from my husband who said he had a situation at home. The 3 year old threw a rock at the 6 year old’s head while playing in the backyard, and my 6 year old was bleeding from the head. We hurried home where I assessed him and agreed with my husband that he didn’t need to go to the hospital for stitches. Stressful!

I was so thankful for my amazing coworker who was picking up my MCM 10K packet! I wouldn’t have been able to leave to go get it with all that going on.

I made the kids dinner and then left at 6pm to work a concert that night. It was a good night at work, but another late one. I got home at 1:00am.

When I finally went to bed at 1:30am, I was first woken up by one kid who came into my bed to sleep and then the other who wanted me to go to the bathroom with him. I was unsure if I would make it to the MCM 10K in the morning.

Sunday – I got up for the MCM 10K at 5:30am! I was so proud of myself after just a few hours of interrupted sleep! I quickly got ready and drove to Metro.

on Metro for MCM 10KDid the 10K and met my goal time of under 55 minutes, miraculously.

Came home in time for my husband and daughter to get to soccer, and just relaxed and spent quality time with my youngest.

Then I took my middle out for some one on one time. He loves to go out on adventures and errands with me. This consisted of Fleet Feet Sports, Party City, Starbucks, Pet Valu, and finally Wegmans. Whew! We grocery shopped and brought home dinner and ate as a family – we love the Wegman’s buffet for a quick meal.

I put the kids to bed and was so exhausted that I fell asleep with the three year old at 8:30pm. #reallife

Can you blame me?

I had things I needed to do after he was in bed, such as laundry, writing this post, and some schedule items for this week. Didn’t happen.

So that’s that. Let’s just call it a super early taper for Challenge Florida. #reallife

It’s my real life, and it’s Monday and I wore dirty clothes today I dug out of my laundry.

What’s one fun thing you did this week or weekend?
